Federal Budget 2008 submission
ACT Peak Oil made a submission to the 2008 Federal Budget process. Our call for the abolition of FBT concessions on motor vehicles, which cost nearly $2 billion annually, was not heeded. Unfortunately the Australian Government has also so far failed to adopt our recommendation to urgently establish an Oil Vulnerability Commission, nor has it chosen to explicitly acknowledge Peak Oil in the preparation of policy, even as the oil crisis deepens.
The Infrastructure Australia fund is welcome, as too is the appointment of Peter Newman to its board, however they do need to follow his advice.
ACT Peak Oil President Alex Pollard today welcomed announcement of a light rail taskforce by the Conservation Council and Canberra Business Council. "An electrified mass transit system will be important if Canberra is to meet emission targets, and a crucial component of any viable transport system after Peak Oil." he said.
"Canberrans can expect ever-rising fuel costs as world oil production peaks and begins an irreversible decline. Even worse, an oil export crisis is forseeable

Update: The Canberra Times featured ACT Peak Oil for a second day running after we held up a banner at the opening of the last stage of the GDE. Minister Hargreaves came over and we had a polite and friendly chat with him on transport policy.
Speaking today at the Canberra 2020 summit, Alex Pollard, President of ACT Peak Oil, said "The ACT Government's decision to build the GDE with only one lane in each direction is to be welcomed. ACT Peak Oil recognises this decision as a prudent cost saving measure. The daily commute will be uneconomic to most Canberrans within a decade. World oil production is likely to peak and decline imminently. Additional expenditure on the road would have been a waste."
