Ben Davies helpfully summarises the Molonglo consultation for those that
couldn't be there

I made it out to the Molonglo thing, where there were about 30-40 people.
Caroline Le Couteur was also there.

Unfortunately I was pretty tired and POed when I got there so wasn't
totally on the ball. There were bunches of posters about various design
features:
- views of the area and surrounds
- slope and aspect
- water sensitive design
- road layouts
- crosscut views
- block angles and building envelopes for solar orientation
- etc

Off the top of my head:

Rationale for the main road location:
This alignment was chosen because it allegedly limits the maximum slope to
no more than 5% "for public transport". Interesting assertion, probably
more useful for cyclists and walkers than a powered vehicle.

There were 2 street layouts shown:
- the preferred option had a NE/SW road in eastern Coombs as it followed
the ridge. This results in some blocks being less efficiently oriented.
The non preferred option had better oriented streets, but it was claimed
that this would require a lot more earth moving (where does the dirt and
rock go to?) and possible some other problems (less houses able to fit
in?).

- The plans were not detailed enough to show anything in terms of block
locations...

- There looked to be a reasonable analysis done in terms of block
orientation and shading from neighbouring houses. I didn't see any summary
stats, perhaps because blocks are not drawn up yet.

- Again it appears that the place will be a gunghalin style development of
close houses and minimal gardens. The streets are 7.5m wide to accommodate
a range of transport. Tree lined avenues are also planned.

- Cycle paths and water sensitive design infrastructure is in the plan in
some form. Cycle paths link to the existing path that goes from Weston
into the ANU & the city. There was also some indication that the Cotter
road and Uriarra will be redirected onto the main road through. This will
eventually allow for a road bike racing crit circuit to link Stromlo and
the new Arboretum together (there is another planned crit circuit there).

That is all I can recall off the top of my head - HTH!
