TWU says transport industry on its knees because of high diesel  
prices. Government subsidy of 18c per litre insufficient.

Comment: If prices go up even further road transport will get a lot  
more expensive or the government will lift the subsidy.

Comment: International environmental agreements can do something  
which works. Peak oil also needs global cooperation.

There will be poor penetration, 2%, and excise is due to go on LPG in  
2011. Diesel would have been a better choice as it is more fuel  
efficient.

Comment: The LPG scheme is a cheap way of appearing to do something.  
Toohey is right about diesel but it would have cost a lot more.

Throwing money at motorists with the LPG scheme encourages fuel use.  
The Commmonwealth's neglect of rail transport is a disgrace. Attacks  
ACT's cutting of bus expenditure.
