Petrol to rise while Government fails to plan

The CSIROs warning that the nation faces dwindling domestic petrol
supplies in 2012 should be a wake-up call to a Government that has so
comprehensively neglected alternative transport energy options,
Democrats leader Senator Lyn Allison said today.

The Government is suffering from tunnel vision. Offshore oil
exploration has reached its used by date. All the evidence shows that
whatever small remaining reserves of oil that might be found will be
costly and difficult to extract. The idea that cheap abundant oil can
still be discovered is a nonsense, Senator Allison said.

The CSIRO has produced two interrelated reports in the past few months.
One says that Australia is getting hotter due to Greenhouse gas
emissions and this most recent report to the Senate inquiry into
Australias oil supply, says that a shortage of fuel will skyrocket
prices at the pump.

When oil consumption exceeds production, as it will do over the next 20
years or so, oil could soar to over $100 a barrel, sending shock waves
through all sectors of the economy.

The self interest of the oil cartels and the Governments lack of vision
are a deadly combination for Australians. Imagine cars lining up for
kilometres waiting to pay a weeks salary for a tank of petrol.

The CSIRO said governments can tackle the fuel crunch by doing more
research and development of biofuels such as ethanol. Ethanol blended
petrol remains unavailable to the vast majority of motorists. Only
Queensland has promoted this renewable fuel.

The Federal Government promised years ago to establish refuelling sites
for cars, fleets and trucks that can use compressed natural gas but
this has come to nothing so there is little interest in buying CNG
vehicles.

And there are still no incentives offered to motorists or auto
manufacturers for the take-up of fuel efficient cars. Australian
motorists are using up oil much faster than they need to.

This is a Federal and states issue. If we can pull together to help
those people in need such as the victims of the tsunami and the recent
bushfires and on-going drought in NSW, then we can plan for a world for
our children which isnt scorched by UV rays and where the term petrol
is only be found in the indexes of history books, Senator Allison said.
