Sir/Madam

David Marr's and Marion Wilkinson's article about the oil-for-food kickback scandal was devastating (They backed the scam to the bitter end, SMH, April 17). It is, as they say, one of the most extraordinary failures of government in the nation's history.

Soon after reading the story, we heard oil had hit $70 a barrell. In 1996 BHP sent a 'gift' of wheat worth $US5 million 'in the hope of winning oil rights once sanctions are lifted'. BHP clearly knew that global oil production would peak within the decade. It knew oil would become increasingly scarce and more expensive from now on.

The real story is not the AWB paying kickbacks, is it? No, the real story is all about maintaining oil supplies. The question is not so much whether the Government knew about AWB kickbacks. It is this. Was the Government complicit with BHP in its efforts to secure future oil supplies?
