There is a comprehensive (5,000 words) but easy-to-read
article in today's Australian Financial Review about China's
quest for oil and the implications this has for the US. It is a
strategic review covering China's needs, its sources (a fair
account of Australia's role, lot's on Canada), Taiwan and
the future as far as can be reasonably foreseen. No mention
of peak oil, but for all that well worth a read:

A tit-bit:

"Twenty years ago China was East Asia's largest oil exporter.
Now it is the world's second-largest importer. Last year it
accounted for 31 per cent of global growth in oil demand.
China's combined share of the world's consumption of
aluminium, copper, nickel and iron ore more than
doubled within only 10 years, from 7 per cent in 1990 to
15 percent in 2000; it has now reached about 20 per cent
and is likely to double again by the end of the decade."

You should be able to buy today's AFR in your local newsagent
tomorrow (Saturday).
