Dear Members and Supporters,

Next Saturday morning the local ALP will be holding their annual ACT
Conference at 8:00am outside Ridges Lakeside on London Circuit.  They will
be greeted by a large gathering of angry people very upset about the ACT
school closures.  A rally will be held outside the venue to protest the
school closures.

STR had always warned that the ACT could not afford the GDE and this has now
come true.  But the link between school closures and paying for the GDE is
not widely understood in the community.  STR asks, why close schools now?
Has the economy soured compared to last year?  What has happened?  The
differences are Stanhope¹s wasteful spending of $117M for the GDE
(largest-ever capital works spending), and setting aside $138M for his gaol.

The uproar over school closures was not expected by Stanhope who thought we
would all grin and bear it.  The school closures will save only $34M so to
help pay for the GDE, massive rate increases are just around the corner for
property owners.

Although we have lost the bush, we still think it is worth sticking it to
Stanhope and Corbell etc, and all the other sad cases who voted in the
Legislative Assembly to change the law so Bruce and O'Connor Ridges could be
trashed to build the GDE.

Wouldn¹t it would be great if STR supporters attended the rally with
placards like $117M GDE = SCHOOL CLOSURES

PLEASE JOIN US AT 8:30am at Ridges Lakeside, this Saturday, 29 July 2006.
Bring your own placards or just come along to let Stanhope and the ALP know
how you feel!
