Does cycling in Australia take gold? A health promotion perspective

Jan Garrard, Senior Lecturer, School of Health and Social Development,
Deakin University

Australia's strategy to achieve excellence in sporting performance
(including cycling) in the international arena has been very successful,
and has achieved widespread recognition and acclaim. However, our track
record of investment and achievement in promoting physical activity at
the population level compares unfavourably with other countries.
Cycling promotion, in particular, is poorly supported given the multiple
health, social and environmental benefits of cycling for recreation and
transport. Evidence indicates that there is considerable potential to
increase cycling prevalence in Australia. A health promotion approach
to increasing participation in cycling is presented, drawing on lessons
learned from successful physical activity promotion strategies
internationally.
