ACT Peak Oil President Alex Pollard today welcomed announcement of a light rail taskforce by the Conservation Council and Canberra Business Council. "An electrified mass transit system will be important if Canberra is to meet emission targets, and a crucial component of any viable transport system after Peak Oil." he said.
"Canberrans can expect ever-rising fuel costs as world oil production peaks and begins an irreversible decline. Even worse, an oil export crisis is forseeable, as oil producing nations consume more of their oil production domestically, leading to sharp declines in oil supply on the world market."
"Rail transport can be powered by renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. This would slash our dependence on oil."
"Rail freight will become essential for inland transport in years to come, so an exploration of inter-city rail links will be of great benefit to Canberra businesses."
"The Conservation Council and Canberra Business Council should be applauded for taking the initiative. Hopefully both the ACT Government and the National Capital Authority can be pursuaded to end their indifferent attitude to achieving mass transit which is comfortable, reliable and sustainable."
