ACT Peak Oil

About ACT Peak Oil
ACT Peak Oil is a non-profit group concerned with the issue of peak oil/peak energy and its twin, climate change. We believe that peak oil is either occurring now or is soon approaching and that preparing for and dealing with the consequences will require significant changes to our economy, to trade, to our lifestyles and to our lives. Our aim is to raise public, political and corporate awareness within Australia of the inevitable decline in availability of oil by researching, analysing and presenting the issue of Peak Oil and its impact on sustainability and the environment.

We encourage people to get involved by joining our mailing lists - the announcement list or the discussion list - by making comments on the site, by contributing towards submissions, and by attending featured events. We also encourage people to write letters, talk about the issue with friends and family, reduce their fossil fuel use, and plan for a lower energy future. Peak oil will affect us all but the sooner people become aware of it and its consequences, the sooner changes can be made, and the less painful the end result.

Peak Oil and Canberra
Peak oil will affect Canberra significantly and it is poorly prepared. Canberra is a decentralised city built for the car, with limited public transport, a sizeable surrounding population that commutes to Canberra for work, and where the "solutions" to transport problems are the Gungahlin Drive Extension (with a budget of $116.05m) and the proposed Belconnen to City "TransitWay". Peak oil needs to be considered in all planning decisions - something yet to happen for Canberra.
