The New York Times published an article on Friday about the adoption of electricity-powered cars in Santa Monica, California:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/21/business/santa-monica-bets-on-electric-cars-but-consumers-are-slow-to-switch.html

On the positive side, they report that everyone who has switched to electric is pleased with their change.

On the other side, their use is subsidized by taxpayer funded charging stations, eliminating fees otherwise applicable for the installation of domestic recharging, free parking and a $7,500 "tax credit". Private companies are also providing free recharging (the cost of infrastructure and the electricity is absorbed - but would still be a business cost eligible for tax deduction).
