Matt Mushalik summarised as follows:
Energy Reserve Authority in every Western democracy needed because short
term thinking politicians have failed to deal with energy and
environment in manageable, systematic, coherent way. We seem to rock
from issue to issue with no resolution. Let's learn from the monetary
system and apply the same principles to energy and environment.
Parliament must enact legislation to create an independent board of
governors to operate in the interest of the nation not party politics of
the day and the election cycle.
Shale oil and fracking will not make the US energy independent.8 mb/d
import requirement. Doesn't change the energy system from a hydrocarbon
based economy to a light carbon or non-carbon system. Perpetrates
existing reliance on fossil fuels without making the bold, brave and
necessary decisions to move forward with new technology.
Australian coal seam gas exports threatening domestic supply. US has
export control device for natural gas and crude oil. Permits required.
Products can be exported. Hofmeister is strongly advocating use of
natural gas as transport fuel to replace imported oil for trucks, cars,
buses. But there would not be enough gas to do all that and export gas
at the same time.
Domestic reserve to underpin domestic manufacturing. Dow Chemical is
arguing for this as feedstock. In the US, 30 gas export terminal
applications would be serious drain on gas supplies.
International companies are not national, but global companies. Free
trade, free movement. There has to be a balance between IOC interests
and national interests. Current political process is not going to
deliver this balance.Independent authority needed. IOCs hope that
Hofmeister goes away. Hofmeister is focussed on grassroots, the people
who vote, not people who pay politicians for their campaign expenses.
Hofmeister looking forward to come to Australia to talk to grassroots
folks. Citizens have to understand what's at stake: affordable,
available and sustainable energy
