*Not a peep on peak oil: Greens call for strategy *
Greens Planning and TAMS spokesperson, Caroline Le Couteur, says that
Canberra is likely to start feeling major impacts of peak oil****in the
next ten years, yet the Government has no strategy and is largely
ignoring the problem.
'Peak oil' describes the point in time when the worldwide production of
oil is maximised, meaning the supply of oil will plateau and fall,
bringing serious problems and disruptions.[1] <#_ftn1>[1]
"It's incredible that /there is not a single reference/ to 'peak oil' in
any of the Government's major planning, transport, infrastructure or
climate change plans", said Caroline Le Couteur.
"Canberra is vulnerable to peak oil. We're talking about problems like
decreased mobility, disruptions to the supply chain, cost of living
increases, and significant impacts on residents in Canberra's outer
suburbs, who are highly vulnerable to high fuel prices.
"In question time today, Mr Stanhope failed to point to any coordinated
Government effort to prepare Canberra for the impending problems of peak
oil'.
"The Liberal Party demonstrated their lack of concern for impending cost
of living impacts on Canberra families by scoffing and heckling at the
Greens' questions.
"As a recent series of experts' reports pointed out, Queensland has a
program of policy work to address the problem of peak oil, but the ACT
is failing to address petroleum security issues or their
consequences."[2][2] <#_ftn2>
"The Greens are calling on the ACT Government to immediately develop an
ACT plan to respond to the challenge of peak oil and ensure Canberra can
become a thriving, resilient and sustainable community when we no longer
rely on oil.
"The Greens have concrete proposals to transform Canberra into a
resilient, sustainable city. We will continue to push the Government to
accept and prepare for the reality of peak oil scenarios in Canberra,"
Ms Le Couteur said.
