"From 1 July this year more businesses will be able to claim fuel tax
credits for the first time, and many others will be able to claim
additional fuel tax credits.
You can now claim for the fuel you use in industries like construction,
manufacturing, wholesale, retail and landscaping for items ranging from
bulldozers and backhoes to whipper-snippers and chainsaws. "
Places the govt in an interesting position, holding out against an excise
cut for ordinary motorists, yet subsidising business fuel use all across
the economy.
How can the govt ensure small business owners don't just claim a rebate for
their personal driving also?
To be blunt, our economy has become very consumption-oriented, meaning
capital and energy are consumed without contributing to creating a
sustainable income stream that doesn't rely on cheap oil - eg expenditure
on SUVs instead of a rail line. A lot of businesses are driving trucks
around to achieve basically nothing of lasting value. Tax breaks like this
will prolong the misallocation of capital and precious fuel on worthless or
inefficient activities.
