After Iraq, the US and its allies have no come-back against this logic:

"Of course, Saddam Hussein ought to have been hanged for destroying several
Shiite villages," Putin said in Moscow. "And the incumbent Georgian leaders
who razed ten Ossetian villages at once, who ran elderly people and
children with tanks, who burned civilian alive in their sheds — these
leaders must be taken under protection."

Having broken their promises and expanded NATO all the way up to Russia,
the US and its allies have no come-back, the US has nothing in
reserve to counter with, they are impotent, their European allies are
already dependent on Russian gas. The Georgian president's appeal for help
to the US indicates he has been hung out to dry.

Russia's goal is possession of the two crucial pipelines running thru
Georgia, the only non-Russian route for Caspian oil and gas.

It reminds me of the Bond film "The World is Not Enough", except now
the West are the hapless losers. For Putin "South Ossetia is Not Enough"
