I am generally not into conspiracy theories but this one might just be plausible.  My own readings of oil production info was that Saudi Arabia production is the key and peak oil would be for real when Saudi Arabia went into decline. Lo and behold last year I came across a report (I am not sure if it was referred to on this list) saying their mature fields were faced with an 8% decline - this is a reference to it: http://deconsumption.typepad.com/deconsumption/2006/04/aramco_producti.html  

There have not been any follow up reports - I suspect whoever issued it has had a career demotion, maybe a bullet through the head... 

Meanwhile West Texas crude is currently north of US$80 a barrel, so maybe the end is nigh? ☺
