Yesterday's Canberra Times reported the tabling of a petition in the  
Legislative assembly opposing the construction of the Dragway.

The reasons given in the petition apparently did not cover the  
immanent peaking of world oil supplies which was recently  
investigated by the Senate. There is no argument about whether world  
oil supplies will start to decline, only when. Independent geologists  
believe it will happen in less than 10 years, probably five.  
Governments relying on unverified reserve figures provided by the  
OPEC cartel put the date 40 years away and hope that new technologies  
will find us alternative sources of affordable fuel.

For the ACT Government to subsidise the dragway in this situation is  
absurd.
