ACCC urged to monitor ethanol prices

The Federal Government has asked the Australian Competition and
Consumer Commission (ACCC) to start monitoring the price of ethanol
blended fuel.

The Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile made the announcement at a
Nationals state conference in Brisbane this morning.

Mr Vaile says fuel companies are not passing on the production
subsidies in ethanol fuels, a saving of about four cents a litre.

He says at a time when fuel prices are hurting all Australians every
opportunity should be taken to help consumers.

"The ACCC through price monitoring can apply the greatest pressure
possible to the distribution system by identifying to consumers what
is going on," he said.

"If consumers start voting with their feet and they go and buy their
product from distributors that are passing on the saving then other
companies will soon get the message."
