The last two days have been quiet. There are a few stories that merit  
letters today chief amongst them the PMs speech on energy and water.

PM promotes nuclear energy, water recycling and oil exploration.  
Blames Middle East for high petrol prices.

Comment: While oil exploration may find more oil it is unlikely to  
find more large provinces like Bass Strait and it is highly likely  
that the depletion of existing fields will be faster than new finds  
can be put online. Australia has passed peak production.

It's not just trouble in the Middle East pushing up prices. There is  
no spare capacity in the world and new capacity is not being added  
fast enough to replace depleting regions such as the North Sea.

The path to liquid fuels from nuclear is unclear and that is the most  
immediate problem. Unless we get fast breeder reactors working high  
quality u235 resources are too limited to bet our future on.
