Petrol prices: get healthier, not poorer
Canberra cycling group Pedal Power has said that with petrol prices rising
it’s a great time to start doing more trips by bicycle.
Pedal Power spokesman, Tony Shields, said that Canberra’s crisp winter
mornings are beautiful to ride in and with the money you save you can buy
warm clothing to keep out the cold.
‘Complaining about petrol prices won’t make you feel any better. However, a
bike ride will,’ said Mr Shields. ‘Not all trips can be taken by bike, but
a lot, like short trips down to the shops etc are perfect for riding your
bike. And once you get started you can progress to riding to work.’
Dr Liz Fraser, a general practitioner in Civic, not only saves money by
cycling to work but also practises what she preaches to her patients.
Dr Fraser said that, ‘Over 50 per cent of Australian adults are overweight,
and therefore at greater risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, and diabetes.’
‘I urge my patients to get active, but many can’t find the extra time to fit
it in. The great thing about cycling to work or to the shops is that you
don’t need extra time. It just becomes part of your daily routine.’
Mr Shields said that if you haven’t been cycling for a while it’s best to
start out on quiet streets and bike paths on weekends.
‘The thing to remember about cycling to work is you don’t have to cycle on
the same roads you drive to work on. Pick up a copy of the Canberra cycling
map from Pedal Power and investigate quieter streets and bike paths on the
weekend when you’re not in a rush and the traffic is quieter.
To get a copy of the Canberra cycling map call Pedal Power on 6248 7995 or
call in at their office in the new Griffin Centre in Civic open between 12
midday and 2pm Tuesday to Friday.
