"Allan Lohe, Chair of Save the Ridge said that in spite of the court¹s
decision the GDE is looking less of a goer than ever.
The cost of this project has been escalating constantly to the point where
the government had to appropriate an additional $16 million in May. Not
only is the Territory barely able to afford to build the road, but Canberra
residents will struggle to afford to use it with petrol at $1.35 per litre,
forecast to rise to $1.70 by Christmas, and predictions of $3 per litre
before the end of 2007.
If the government were serious about the welfare of Gungahlin people, the
money would be put into a light rail system which would provide a direct
link to the city, instead of a road that leads to the Glenloch Interchange,
which is a destination for, wait for it, zero percent of commuter journeys
out of Gungahlin.
A light rail system would also enable many Gungahlin families to dispense
with a second car and would largely cushion them from the astronomical
petrol price rises that have been predicted."
