There will be a public lecture later today in Canberra by Professor
Albert Bartlett. I have seen a video of this lecture and can recommend
it. Basically, it's an application of compound interest and exponential
functions to everyday problems like human population increase and peak
oil. Clearly presented and Bartlett gives the audience 'rules of thumb'
so they can visualize immediately (without the maths) what a "1%
increase" or a "5% increase" will mean in the medium and long term.
Bartlett's a bit of a celebrity so do try to get along and hear him.
He's also an inspiration, being around 80 now and still going strong.
A Bartlett quote: “Smart growth ultimately gets you to exactly the same
place as dumb growth--you just get there first class.”
Professor Albert Bartlett is retired Professor of Physics from the
University of Colorado
His talk is “Arithmetic, Population and Energy”. Since the late 1960s
Professor Bartlett has concentrated on public education of the problems
relating to population growth. He has given his lecture, "Arithmetic,
Population, and Energy" over 1300 times to audiences of all levels from
coast to coast in the US. More recently he has written on
sustainability, examining the widespread misuse of the term, and
examining the conditions that are necessary for sustainability in any
society.
3pm Saturday 10 December at the CSIRO Discovery Centre
Clunies Ross Street, Acton, ACT
The lecture is organised by Sustainable Population Australia inc
(Canberra region branch)
All welcome! The lecture will be followed by Christmas drinks.
