Against a backdrop of rising petrol prices, the Canberra Business Council
and the Conservation Council will form a taskforce to make the case for a
rail network around Canberra.
The group will put together a proposal for light rail in the city before
examining a potential high-speed rail link between Sydney, Melbourne and
Canberra.

It will take the proposals to the Federal Government body Infrastructure
Australia in a bid to gain funding for the rail projects.

Business Council director Chris Faulks said it was still early days for the
taskforce.

But it would be a ''coalition of interested parties'' examining light rail
from the perspective of the Government, academia and community groups.

Conservation Council acting director Genevieve Wauchope said the taskforce
would look into partnerships between the public and private sector.

She said the taskforce was attracting interest from public transport
experts.
