Host: Deb Foskey, MLA
When: 7:30 pm
Date: Monday, 12 September 2005
Where: Reception Room, ACT Legislative Assembly

Details:
The motor vehicle causes some well-known major impacts on Australia's
health, such as the high rates of injury and death due to traffic
crashes, and the more insidious effects of air pollution.
However there are a huge range of other health consequences that result
from the majority of the nation using their car every day - including a
significant role for the automobile in the current obesity epidemic.
Sarah's presentation will detail her research on Australia's love of the
automobile and how the car came to be such a dominant and pervasive form
of transport. Sarah will reflect on what she has found out about the
role of the motor vehicle in the nation's economy, and its place in
people's hearts and minds, and how together these explain Australia's
"car reliance". Car reliance has multiple consequences for the daily
life and well being of Australians and Sarah's talk will end with
questions about whether ongoing car reliance is sustainable, or indeed
desirable?
