arrive 1.45 pm for 2:00pm - 4:30pm presentation

The modern Eco-villages of today are an innovative approach in which people
live in harmony with nature and each other whilst achieving all aspects of
sustainability. They are about tackling global problems at a local level on
a day to day basis. As such they represent a leading-edge movement towards
developing sustainable human settlements and provide a testing ground for
new ideas, techniques and technologies that are now increasingly being
integrated, and accepted, into the mainstream.

This thought provoking presentation will introduce the concepts involved
with eco-villages through insightful key lessons learned from the best
practice eco-villages in Australia and around the world.

The Presenters

Sarah West, GeoLINK

Sarah has undertaken two study tours of over 50 eco-villages in the USA,
Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and attended eco-villages training
courses in Findhorn, Scotland and Crystal Waters, Queensland. This
presentation distils information from these experiences, highlighting
lessons learnt about making community life easier, sustainable and more
satisfying. Sarah will also present examples from her study tours of her
other passion - innovative community or neighbourhood-scale sewerage
systems.

Paul Antonelli, Greenedge Projects

Paul has recently visited over 35 of the best examples of ecovillages and
sustainable developments across the world. He also has the practical
experience of being the founder and key driver of the Somerville Eco-village
based in the Perth hills. This has enabled Paul to develop a unique insight
into the ecological, economic and social systems that govern the design and
creation of ecologically sustainable development. He has combined both the
practical application with high level research through a PhD at Murdoch
University of which he is in his final year. The PhD thesis focuses on the
topic of "Making Ecovillages Happen" where they are applicable with a
particular focus on the economic imperative.
