"Depletionists" to use the label from BTRE Working Paper 61 Is the World
Running out of oil? A Review of the Debate have become more vociferous
in recent months, declaring that the "Hubbert Peak" in world oil
production is with us, or will occur shortly. Some of the Depletionists
use "Plan B" to describe what may need to be done to cope with
increasing oil prices and decreasing oil availabilities. Dr Bennett, who
is the founder of the Sustainable Transport Coalition, will review some
of the papers on potential mitigation measures, and will discuss the
interventions that the STC is calling for from governments in its policy
paper "Oil: Living with Less" (see
http://www.stcwa.org.au/papers/STCpolicy04Oilprf.pdf ). Recent research
on the energy efficiency of biofuels will also be presented.
